40-note Polyphony Handsets
Many handsets from Japan or Korea use a format known as '16-note polyphony from J-phone' or SMAF MA-2 LSI.
If you have been sent to this page by the Ringtone Converter this will be the format your phone uses.
To create ringtones for these phones using the Ringtone Converter is quite easy and is a two stage process, first you need to create the ringtone file, then transfer the file to your phone.
Creating a 16 chord polyphonic format file
Use the Midi to SMAF converter to convert any midi file into a SMAF (.mmf) file for use with your phone. The Midi to SMAF converter is documented here.
If you would like to use one of the sample, non-polyphonic ringtones included with the Ringtone Converter, choose a ringtone and then select the 'File' menu, then 'Save as' and save the file as a Smaf (mmf) file.
As you have a 16 note phone, select the 16 chord conversion when converting the file to the SMAF format.
Transferring the file to your phone
Depending on your handset, you can transfer SMAF ringtone files to your phone in a number of ways.
Option 1 - Cable transfer
If your phone came with a cable then this is probably the easiest way to add ringtones to your phone.
Simply connect your phone to the PC per the phone software instructions, start up the software and download the SMAF mmf file the ringtone converter created for you.
Option 2 - WAP
If you do not have a cable, you can add ringtones to almost any polyphonic handset using WAP.
The Ringtone Converter has a fully functional WAP server built in, and will allow you to download the SMAF ringtones.
